About The TLD Project
It’s all about protecting brand, reputation and your audience
The TLD Project is a service developed and maintained by Unlimited Application Ltd for monitoring business web addresses, identifying potential impersonation and gathering evidence for takedown action.
About The TLD Project
Your web address is how customers find you, trust you, and know they are dealing with the right business. If someone registers a version of it and copies your site, that trust is compromised, often before you even know it has happened.
This is not an IT problem. It is risk management — and nobody you already use to look after your IT or website can see it coming.
The TLD Project was born from a real-world, high-impact incident that highlighted just how vulnerable even established brands can be.
A real-world problem that sparked a solution
Unlimited Application developed The TLD Project in direct response to a damaging attack on a customer’s brand. This case was both shocking and stressful, and lead to a significant financial and reputational costs. It is a clear sign of how quickly the damage grows when a lookalike web address is used.
The case involved a .de top-level domain being registered and used to mimic the original brand. This wasn’t a simple case of coincidence—it was a deliberate attempt to mislead users and exploit brand recognition. As the affected customer explained, “you can’t be expected to register every domain version under every domain extension to protect your brand.” That one statement captures what The TLD Project is about: solving an invisible problem in a non-technical, affordable and scalable way.
The situation escalated when a legal cease and desist letter arrived, threatening immediate court action in Germany, a different jurisdiction, a different language, and no predictable cost ceiling. This introduced a new depth of complexity, uncertainty, and unlimited legal expense. While we will not go into every detail about the case, the final outcome took months to resolve and came at substantial cost. It was clear a proactive, not reactive, solution was needed. That realisation led directly to the creation of The TLD Project.
Simple enough for any business
Most web address protection services are built for large enterprises with dedicated security teams and budgets to match. Smaller businesses are left exposed, not because solutions don’t exist, but because the existing ones aren’t designed for them.
The TLD Project runs two independent monitoring systems. It watches in real time, detecting new lookalike registrations often within minutes. The other checks across hundreds of top-level domains for spelling variations, character substitutions and common impersonation patterns.
When a threat is found, you start a case. The TLD Project identifies the registrar, hosting provider and registry behind the web address, gathers the technical details, and prepares reports you send from your own business email.
It’s easy to dismiss a risk you cannot see
Cost has nothing to be measured against — it’s never happened, so there is nothing to compare. And the infrastructure behind your web address is managed by IT and developers, not by you — so the moment protection is mentioned, it sounds technical, expensive, and easy to put off.
That’s why we stripped both stoppers when developing The TLD Project.
One subscription costs £54 a year (£60.80 including tax) per core web address, with a 3-month trial and a full money-back guarantee. That covers both monitoring and unlimited, fair use takedown reports.
Catching threats early
Targeted businesses discover a lookalike web address only after the damage is done — a customer has been misled, money has been lost, or a complaint has arrived that makes no sense until you find the fake site.
This service is about catching threats early. Spotting registrations and web address activations, organisations are able to act early, before a major crisis can take hold.
If a web address such as yourbrand-support.com or yourbrand.de is registered and begins mimicking your site, The TLD Project detects it, gathers the technical evidence, and prepares the takedown reports. You act before a scam campaign gains traction… not after.
