Web address takedown step 1
Web address takedown
When a web address is impersonating your business, act with confidence
A similar web address is pretending to be your business. It may be copying your website, sending email in your name or capturing your customers’ information.
The TLD Project gives you a structured process to gather evidence, identify the right provider and prepare a takedown report.

A takedown is straightforward in theory, complicated in practice
You need to work out who registered the domain, who is hosting the website and who has authority over the extension. Each may be a different organisation, in a different country, with a different abuse reporting process.
Meanwhile, every day the site stays live is another day it can mislead your customers.
From suspicious web address to structured takedown report
The TLD Project helps you move from spotting a problem to preparing the right report for the right provider:
- Record the target, capture the suspicious URL and its content as evidence
- Identify the providers, find the hosting provider, domain registrar and relevant abuse contacts
- Gather technical evidence, collect RDAP details, registration data and other supporting information
- Prepare the report, generate a structured takedown request with the evidence attached, ready to send to the appropriate provider
You don’t need to know the process in advance. The app guides you through it.
Different problems, different complaints
Not every takedown goes to the same place. The right recipient depends on what the impersonating web address is doing:
- Hosting a copied website → the hosting provider’s abuse contac
- Registered to deceive → the domain registrar, via their abuse or WHOIS complaint process
- Using a restricted extension improperly → the domain registry or relevant authority for that TLD
The TLD Project helps you identify which route applies and prepare the evidence each recipient needs.
Ouch, you’ve been targeted
We hope your business never needs to take down a harmful web address. But if you do, The TLD Project is here to help.
Don’t let an ouch turn into an “ooooooh…”

Once the immediate threat is handled, ongoing monitoring helps you spot the next one early
Pre-register for early access
The TLD Project is now in early release, giving businesses — including those currently facing a live impersonation attack — access to tools that help them add and monitor their websites for fake web addresses, gather evidence, and prepare takedown reports.
Early release registration gives you early access.
